Philip Sunshine was a distinguished Atlanta businessman, civic leader, and philanthropist whose career and community impact spanned more than six decades. A native Atlantan, he was born on December 17, 1930, and became a respected figure in the city's business and charitable communities through his entrepreneurial spirit, generosity, and commitment to public service.

A graduate of Bass High School, Mr. Sunshine earned a degree in Accounting from the University of Georgia in 1952. Following his education, he served his country as a First Lieutenant in Air Force Intelligence before returning to Atlanta to join the family business, Sunshine Department Store, founded by his parents in 1925. Under his leadership, the company expanded to five stores across metro Atlanta and became known for its customer service and community-minded values.

Mr. Sunshine later became an accomplished commercial real estate developer and property owner, recognized for his hands-on management style, integrity, and strong work ethic. He was among the early developers of covered shopping centers in Atlanta and played a role in shaping the city's growing commercial landscape.

Deeply engaged in civic and charitable causes, Mr. Sunshine served as President of the Retail Merchants Association in the 1970s and was a lifelong member of Ahavath Achim Synagogue. He was also an active supporter of numerous organizations, including Scottish Rite Hospital, Jewish Family Services, and Weinstein Hospice.

In later years, he partnered with his wife, Mona Sunshine, in creating the Sunshine Symposium, an international cancer research collaboration between Emory Winship Cancer Institute and Koç University Hospital in Istanbul, advancing medical education and global partnerships.

Remembered for his bright spirit, warmth, humor, and generosity, Philip Sunshine leaves a lasting legacy in business, philanthropy, and the many lives he touched throughout Atlanta and beyond.

The symposium was established to honor Philip's memory and to carry forward the values of scholarship, friendship, and international goodwill that defined his life alongside Mona.
